Since 2001, the historic centre of Guimar?es has integrated UNESCO’s list of WHS, thanks to the City Hall’s dedicated efforts to rehabilitate, recover, and preserve the area’s ancient history.
In 2016, Guimar?es sought an extension to include the Couros area as part of the city’s historic centre. Today, this area has received the status of a World Heritage Site, expanding the previously designated area to 38.4 hectares.
